Autism Acceptance Month 2025

It’s AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH (and world autism awareness day) – but the crucial word for me, for this month, is it being acceptance month, not just awareness! I used to not fully appreciate the difference between these two things, but over the years I have realised that me being aware and having knowledge of autism is very different from me accepting who I am and loving myself! So now I feel kind of passionate about the difference between these two words.

Autism Acceptance Month is an internationally celebrated month that celebrates the experiences and identities of autistic individuals. It emphasises understanding, inclusion, and support, moving beyond awareness towards meaningful acceptance. To me, acceptance is about truly appreciating differences and not really thinking of them as problems or issues to be overcome but as beautiful things to be celebrated and embraced and involved. Awareness to me is knowing, recognising, trying to solve things, while acceptance is proactively involving, changing your own ideas and actions, including, collaborating, and being proud.

I want to share six (out of many) things I now do, or try to do, accept my autistic self rather than just being aware of myself. It’s a journey of self love and I’m not always perfect, but I am continuously trying to love who I am, and accept myself! What things do you do or will you do this month to accept yourself?

– I spend money on stimming toys and things to calm me down
– I give myself time to enjoy my special interests
– I talk about my special interests with people and share my passion!!
– I try to give myself extra rest when I need it
– I let people around me know when I need to recharge my batteries
– I utilise safe foods and reminders when I’m struggling with executive function and/or burnout
